womans heiß ersehntes debütablum happy freedom ist nun über asmara records erhältlich. einfache antworten sind gefragt. woman stellen lieber fragen. zum beispiel diese hier: where you gonna go when the planet erupts? heißt es im ersten vers von dust, dem ersten song auf happy freedom, dem ersten album des kölner trios. seit fünf jahren wird bereits über diese band gemunkelt, wer sie von anfang an kennt, tauscht seine frühen eindrücke wie geheimwissen aus. die geschichte begann 2012 in der kellerbar im belgischen viertel von köln. drei befreundete musiker aus der stadt hatten noch nicht einmal einen namen, aber das erste set stand. es war laut und chaotisch, halb einstürzende neubauten, halb suicide. wer damals dabei war, rieb sich die augen: okay, das ding steckte konzeptionell noch in den kinderschuhen, aber die intensität und experimentierfreude der musik nahm alle ein.

das 1972 erschienene selbstbetitelte debütalbum der deutschen gruppe oratorium ist eines jener seltenen alben, die in einer gewissen mystik gehüllt sind. dies ist ein album das dich in eine heilige und übernatürliche welt einlädt, zu einem kompromisslosen religiös-progressiven rock. unter der leitung von komponist bernhard hornig wurde die band 1967 unter dem namen christliche einheit mit dem schwerpunkt auf religiöser musik gegründet. die ursprüngliche besetzung der band bestand aus drei brüdern und zwei klassenkameraden, alle noch jugendliche zu der zeit. die hornig-brüder waren die kreativen köpfe in der band. bernhard fungierte als komponist, georg kümmerte sich um das schreiben der texte und ihr jüngsten bruder rainer, der als mitglied eines berühmten deutschen jugendchores gesangsausbildung gehabt hatte, übernahm die hauptstimme.

die mitglieder der britischen gruppe hawkwind gelten als begründer des sogenannten space rock, einer psychedelischen spielart des hard rock. die band wurde 1969 gegründet und hat 1970 ihr erstes album vorgelegt. gründer und einziges konstantes mitglied ist der gitarrist dave brock.

ofo the rock company (originally known as ofo the back company) were nigeria’s first acid-rock band. blending hendrix and deep purple with shamanism and a pro-black philosophy, they cut their teeth at fela kuti’s afrika shrine, developing a fearsome live reputation that intimidated every other band in lagos. no one wanted to follow the guys from ofo, not even fela himself.

in 2017, the finnish jazz scene seems to bubble with talent. one of the most prominent players in this mix is by definition, trumpeter jukka eskola. after over a decade of adventures in different spaces of jazz – from the dance floor burn of the five corners quintet to the raw expressive modes of mikko innanen’s small big band, jimi tenor’s cosmic jazz and his own prime cti styled solo recordings – eskola takes things back to bare basics. and as usual, when it’s done right, it’s the best thing out there.

in mid-seventies, nigerian bands came and went with alarming regularity, rising meteorically from the slums to stardom and falling back again just as quickly. masisi mass funk from anamara state was one such band. but during their brief moment in the stratosphere, they produced a funk gem in i want you girl.

the self-proclaimed funkiest band on the west coast of africa, the heads funk band, could arguably make that claim for the whole continent. featuring the slick guitar of felix ‘feladey’ odey, the slinky drumming of eddie offeyi and the swirling keyboard chops of kevin ‘fortune’ coburn, nobody was funkier. and that’s not even taking into account the dance floor monsters they were releasing at the same time as akwassa.

the band scarletts fall is a duo formed in 2014 by ruth childs (british-american performance artist and singer based in geneva) and stephane vecchione (swiss performance artist and musician based in lausanne). they define themselves as dirty-girlie-kitchen-pop mixing catchy melodies and repetitive looping with fragile vocals and provocative texts. out of their playfully ironic and poetic universe you can ear shades of can, broadcast and young marble giants.

soulwax emerge with news of forthcoming musical endeavours, the soundtrack for belgica - a new film by oscar nominated director, felix van groeningen. the film sees soulwax’s influence throughout from composing, arranging and recording the original score to creating each and every one of the fictional musical artists featured. a diverse collection of songs, performed by a similarly varied set of artists has seen soulwax create what is a unique soundtrack that continues to see them evolve as one of music’s leading musical protagonists. all the music was recorded and mixed at soulwax’s new deewee studio hq in ghent, where every release is mixed and produced (and sometime written and recorded) by stephen and david dewaele.

in early 1978, vincent ahehehinnou left the orchestre poly-rythmo de cotonou without explanation. he had been one of their principal vocalist since 1968 and had helped transform them from a hard-charging nightclubband into a musical powerhouse and africa-wide sensation. by the end of 1977, after an explosive performance at the pan-african arts and culture festival (festac77) in lagos, the band had reached the very pinnacle of their success.
for nearly forty years, the reasons behind vincent’s sudden departure have remained a mystery. until now. in an interview included with analog africa’s new reissue of best woman – vincent’s first post-poly-rythmo album, which has been out-of-print for close to four decades and nearly impossible to find outside west africa – the great singer finally breaks his silence. he didn’t leave … he was pushed.
